Medicinal Herbs
Medicinal herbs have been used for centuries to cure and aid various ailments and problems among humans. Many are still used
today as a supplement to [or in conjunction with] modern medicines. Some have even been approved by the FDA and we will note those whenever
possible.
One of the more common medical herbs you may have heard about is St. John’s Wort which has been used by some people
to control mild depression. Another very powerful antidepressant is said to be Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)! Ginkgo (Ginkgo
biloba) is another herb that has been tested in clinical trials and said to help depression, especially with reference to the elderly.
There are various herbs used for treatment of high blood pressure. One of these is Coleus forskohlii [a member of the mint family
and first discovered in India] that has been used to lower blood pressure and improve the functions of the heart. Another said ti aid is
Hawthorne (Crataegus oxycantha) which reportedly helps lower blood pressure by dilating the coronary blood vessels.
Herbs such as Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa) and Ampalaya (Momordica charantia) have been used for diabetes treatment for
years in the Philippines. Banaba, especially has been undergoing medical research and clinical trials
Valerian [Valeriana officinalis] has been used over the centuries as a sedative to help in the treatment
of restlessness and nervous disturbances occurring in your sleep.

Chaste Berry [Vitex agnus-castus] has been used among the class of fertility herbs for many, many years. Vitex is said to help by
regulating the ovulatory cycle. Ordinary, everyday Red Clover [Trifolium pretense] has been cited as an infusion that can aid in fertility
treatements as well.
Wild strawberries [Fragaria vesca] grown widely in Europe at one time is an interesting plant. These Woodland Strawberries
were used at times as an herbal medicine. Folks used the leaves, stems, and flowers to make an herbal tea aid those hit
with diarrhea.
Milk thistle [Silybum marianum] has been used in the treatment of liver disease and in a serious matter like deathcap mushroom
poisoning.
A native North American plant simply known as Evening Primrose [Oenothera biennis L.] is one of the many herbs used for
menopause, PMS and even treatment of breast pain among other ailments.
