Anti-Aging Herbs
The desire to stay young or to retain relative youth in your advancing years is on the mind of everyone these days. From reduced
calorie diets to the relationship of tobacco in the aging process to the study of stress and its' effect on again, all these and more are on
the table for discussion and examination in the world of medicine today.
One unique area that people are turning to is the use of anti-aging herbs.
There is no "magic bullet" yet for stopping the processes of advancing age but some folks have found ginseng [Panax ginseng] to
aid in the rejuvenation and revitalization of the body.

Ginseng has been found to assist in the regulating of our blood pressure, it aids in maintaining
our blood glucose levels [important for diabetics] and also is a supportive aid with respect to the thymus and our spleen which means
it can aid in boosting our immune system.
The subject of "free radicals" comes up in the discussion of anti-aging and a recent study found that a ginseng
extract has potent antioxidant properties, acting as scavenger of these free radicals among
other things.
It is good to keep in mind that there are subtle differences between Oriental ginseng (Panax Ginseng), Siberian ginseng
(Eleutherococcus Senticocus) and American ginseng (Panax Quinquefolium). The most popular of the three today is Oriental ginseng which is split
into white ginseng [the root dries naturally] and red ginseng [the color comes from processing the root].
Other anti-aging herbs are ones like Rhodiola Rosea (Russian Rhodiola, Golden root) which are described as a class of herbs known
as "Adaptogens". The theory is that they help in relieving the stress of modern day life that robs us of our vitality and actually ages us. This
particular adaptogen was widely used in Russia to deal with the stressful life of living in the very cold Siberian climate.
The ever popular Gingko biloba [a traditional Chinese medicine herb] has been used to boost the memory by
raising brain oxygen levels. It has been known to slightly improve the memory in people with Alzheimer’s. Again, there is no "magic bullet"
but sometimes subtle changes can mean a great deal to someone in this kind of distress.
